It usually starts as a dull ache at the end of a long day. Then it's there by midday. Then it's there when you wake up. Repetitive strain injury doesn't announce itself with a single injury. It builds quietly over months, and by the time most people take it seriously, they've already lost months of productive, pain-free work.

The earlier you act, the more options you have.

What's Actually Happening in Your Hands

Carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, and other RSI conditions share a common cause: repetitive motion under load. Every keystroke activates muscles and tendons in your fingers, hands, and forearms. At normal typing speeds, that's 200 to 400 movements per minute. Over eight hours, the numbers become significant.

The tendons that control your fingers pass through a narrow tunnel at the wrist. When surrounding tissue becomes inflamed from overuse, that tunnel gets tighter. The compression irritates the median nerve. That's where the numbness, tingling, and pain come from. It's mechanical, not mysterious, and it responds to mechanical solutions.

The Signs That Come Before the Diagnosis

Most RSI goes unaddressed in its early stages because the symptoms are easy to rationalize. Watch for these:

Tingling or numbness in the fingers, especially the thumb, index, and middle finger. Aching in the forearm or wrist after a typing session. Weakness in grip when opening jars or holding a phone. Pain that wakes you at night, which is a sign the inflammation is significant enough to cause symptoms without any activity at all.

If you recognize any of these, don't wait for them to resolve on their own. They almost never do without changing something.

Reducing Keyboard Load Without Reducing Output

The instinct is to take breaks. Breaks help, but they address recovery, not the underlying cause. If you return from a break and immediately resume the same volume of typing, you're managing the injury, not reducing it.

The more effective approach is to reduce the total number of keystrokes across a day. Voice dictation is the most direct way to do this for writing tasks. Speaking 500 words produces zero wrist strain. Typing 500 words at 60 wpm takes about eight minutes of continuous finger movement.

What Ergonomics Can and Can't Do

A better keyboard, a wrist rest, or a different mouse position will reduce strain per keystroke. That matters, and you should invest in a good ergonomic setup. But ergonomics is a multiplier, not a replacement. If you're doing too much, doing too much more comfortably is still too much.

The combination of ergonomic hardware and reduced keyboard volume is where real prevention happens. Use a split keyboard or a low-travel mechanical. Keep your wrists neutral, not bent upward. And move a significant portion of your daily word output to voice.

Protecting the Long Game

A software developer types tens of millions of keystrokes over a career. A writer who produces 1,000 words a day reaches 365,000 words in a year. The cumulative load is real, and it accumulates whether you feel it yet or not.

The best time to take RSI seriously is before it's a problem. The second best time is right now, when the ache after a long day is still just an ache and not a diagnosis that requires physical therapy and time off work.
