The Honest Guide to Avoiding Carpal Tunnel as a Developer

Carpal tunnel syndrome does not happen overnight. It builds over months or years of repetitive strain, and by the time the tingling starts, the damage is already meaningful. Most developers know this and do nothing about it anyway, because the risk feels abstract until it is not.
This is not a scare piece. It is a practical one. Here is what actually matters.
Understand What Is Actually Happening
The carpal tunnel is a narrow passage in your wrist that contains the median nerve and several tendons. When those tendons become inflamed from repetitive motion, they press on the nerve. That pressure is what causes the pain, numbness, and weakness associated with the condition.
Typing does not cause this on its own. The combination of repetitive motion, poor wrist angle, and insufficient recovery time causes it. Any one of these factors alone is manageable. All three together, sustained over years, is how people end up considering surgery.
Wrist Position Matters More Than You Think
The most damaging position is typing with your wrists bent upward to reach a keyboard that is too high, or bent sharply downward over a wrist rest that positions them incorrectly.
Neutral wrist position means your forearms are roughly parallel to the floor and your wrists are straight, not bent in any direction. If you have to bend your wrists to reach your keys, your keyboard or chair is at the wrong height.
Get this right first. It costs nothing and has more impact than any accessory you could buy.
Take Keystroke Reduction Seriously
Every keystroke is a small repetitive motion. Fewer keystrokes mean less cumulative strain. This is where people often underestimate voice dictation as a health tool.

The second: make a fist, then spread your fingers as wide as they will go. Repeat ten times. This moves the tendons through their full range of motion and helps prevent the stiffness that precedes inflammation.
Do these in the morning before you start and again in the afternoon. The whole routine takes under two minutes.
Do Not Wait for Symptoms
The most common mistake is treating carpal tunnel prevention as a reactive project. People start stretching and adjusting their setup after the tingling starts, which is after the inflammation is already present.
