RSI Is Preventable: What Developers and Writers Get Wrong

Repetitive strain injury, RSI, follows a pattern. You notice some tightness in your forearm. You ignore it because you have deadlines. The tightness becomes a dull ache. You buy a new mouse. The ache becomes sharp pain that shows up earlier in the day and leaves later at night. By the time most people take it seriously, they've already done real damage.
The frustrating part is that RSI is largely preventable. Not with expensive equipment alone, but with changes to how often and how hard you use your hands.
The Real Cause
RSI isn't caused by typing. It's caused by too much typing without enough recovery. The tendons and muscles in your hands, wrists, and forearms are not designed for the same small motions repeated thousands of times a day, day after day, year after year.
The average developer or writer types somewhere between 40 and 80 words per minute for several hours daily. At 60 words per minute, that's roughly 15,000 to 20,000 keystrokes in a two-hour block. Do that across an eight-hour day and the number gets uncomfortable to think about.
Warning Signs Most People Ignore
Tightness in the forearm after long sessions. Fingers that feel stiff in the morning. Wrists that ache during typing but feel okay at rest. Numbness or tingling in the fingertips, especially the pinky or ring finger.
None of these are emergencies on their own. But they're signals worth taking seriously. They mean you're approaching your load limit.
The Gear Question
Ergonomic keyboards help. Split keyboards reduce ulnar deviation. Vertical mice reduce forearm pronation. These are real improvements worth investing in.
But gear changes the angle of the problem, it doesn't reduce the volume. If you're typing 30,000 words a day on a split keyboard, you're still typing 30,000 words a day. The strain distributes differently, but it's still there.
The most effective intervention is reducing total keystroke count. That means being deliberate about what actually requires typing and what doesn't.

Dictation reduces hand and wrist load significantly for anything involving extended prose. Emails, documentation, notes, draft content, meeting summaries. None of these require hands in the same way that coding or spreadsheet work does.

Also: type with lighter pressure than you think you need to. Most people hammer keys hard enough to trigger the keystroke two or three times over. The key registers on contact. You don't need to push past resistance. Lighter typing is meaningfully less stressful on tendons.
When to See Someone
If you have pain that persists when your hands are completely at rest, or pain that wakes you up at night, see a doctor or physical therapist before you do anything else. Those symptoms suggest something beyond preventable strain.
For everyone else, the advice is simple: start treating your hands like assets instead of utilities. They have to last your whole career.
