Protecting Your Hands: What RSI Looks Like Before It Hurts

Most people who develop repetitive strain injury did not see it coming. They typed every day, felt fine, and then one morning their wrist ached in a way that did not go away. By the time RSI is painful, the underlying damage is already accumulated. The time to act is before the pain starts.

What RSI Actually Is

Repetitive strain injury is an umbrella term for a group of conditions caused by repeated mechanical stress on muscles, tendons, and nerves. For computer users, the most common sites are the wrists, forearms, and fingers. Carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, and cubital tunnel syndrome all fall under this category.

The injury does not come from any single session of typing. It comes from thousands of small, repetitive movements performed over months or years with inadequate recovery time.

Early Warning Signs

The signals are easy to dismiss. A slight stiffness in the fingers in the morning that clears up after a few minutes. A faint ache in the forearm at the end of a long day. Occasional tingling in the fingertips during or after extended typing.

None of these feel urgent. They often come and go. But they are the body flagging that the cumulative load is approaching a threshold. People who act at this stage can usually reverse course. People who push through often cannot.

The Volume Problem

The most direct risk factor is keystroke volume. A developer or writer who types 50,000 to 80,000 keystrokes a day is operating at a level the human hand was not designed to sustain indefinitely.

Reducing keystroke volume without reducing output is the practical goal. This is where voice input becomes relevant as a health strategy, not just a productivity one. Ergonomics Matter, But They Are Not Enough

But a perfectly ergonomic setup still produces repetitive motion if you are typing for six hours a day. Ergonomics reduces the per-keystroke load. Volume reduction reduces the total load.

The best approach combines both: improve your setup and reduce the total number of keystrokes you need to make.

Breaks Are Not Optional

The research on this is consistent. Short, frequent breaks are significantly more protective than longer, infrequent ones. Five minutes away from the keyboard every 45 to 60 minutes allows tendons and muscles to partially recover before the next session of loading.

If Pain Is Already Present

Stop treating it as something to work through. A few days of reduced typing volume early in the injury cycle can prevent months of restricted function later. Build the Habit Before You Need It
