Protecting Your Hands: Reducing Typing Strain Before It Becomes RSI
Repetitive strain injury does not arrive all at once. It builds. First there is mild stiffness in the morning. Then occasional aching after long sessions. Then a tingle in the fingers that you explain away. By the time most people take it seriously, they have already lost months of pain-free work time and are looking at a recovery that takes longer than the warning signs did.
The good news is that the body gives plenty of notice. The bad news is that knowledge workers are trained to ignore it.
What RSI Actually Is
Repetitive strain injury is an umbrella term for damage caused by repeated motion, sustained posture, or overuse without adequate recovery. For keyboard users, the most common forms are carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis in the forearm and wrist, and cubital tunnel syndrome from sustained elbow flexion.
Carpal tunnel compresses the median nerve as it passes through a narrow channel in the wrist. Symptoms include numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers, weakness in grip, and pain that wakes you at night. At its worst, it requires surgery. At its most common, it is manageable, but only if you address it before the nerve is chronically irritated.
The Warning Signs
Take these seriously:
- Aching forearms after one to two hours of typing that was not there six months ago
- Tingling or numbness in any finger during or after keyboard use
- Stiffness in the hands on waking that takes more than a few minutes to resolve
- Weakness when opening jars or gripping objects you previously had no trouble with
- Pain that appears during typing and fades only after a long rest
Any one of these, appearing regularly, is reason to change something now rather than wait.
Reducing the Load
The most direct intervention is to type less. That is not a joke or an oversimplification. Every keystroke is a small mechanical event in your tendons and carpal structures. If you type 6,000 words a day and you can dictate half of that, your hands are doing half the work.
VoiceInk is one way to move volume off the keyboard. For emails, documents, meeting notes, and anything else that is primarily prose, speaking is faster and puts zero load on your hands. You can still type code, commands, and anything where precision matters more than speed.
Posture and Setup
Beyond volume, setup matters significantly. Your wrists should be neutral, not bent upward or downward, while typing. Wrists resting on a hard edge while typing, as opposed to between keystrokes, increases carpal tunnel pressure by as much as 30 percent according to occupational health research.
Your elbows should be at roughly 90 degrees. If your keyboard forces your wrists to bend outward, a split keyboard may help. Mouse use is often overlooked, but sustained gripping and fine lateral movement contribute to forearm tendinitis. A vertical mouse or trackball reduces this load.
Take breaks that are actual breaks. Standing up for thirty seconds while checking your phone is not a break for your hands. Letting them rest in a neutral, unclenched position for five to ten minutes per hour is.
If You Are Already in Pain
Stop typing as much as possible and see a doctor or physiotherapist who works with repetitive strain. Ice, rest, and anti-inflammatories address symptoms but not cause. The cause is load, and load reduction, through voice, better ergonomics, or shorter sessions, is the only thing that lets tissue recover.
Most mild RSI resolves with several weeks of reduced load combined with targeted stretching. Ignoring it converts a weeks-long problem into a months-long one.
The Simplest Thing You Can Do Today
Dictate your next email instead of typing it. Not because it is faster, though it probably is. Because every sentence you speak is a sentence your hands did not have to type.
Small reductions in daily load, sustained over months, are what keep you working comfortably for years.
