Protect Your Wrists Before They Start Hurting
Most people don't think about their wrists until something goes wrong. A tingle, a numbness, a persistent ache that wasn't there six months ago. By that point, the repetitive strain has usually been accumulating for a long time.
The better approach is to reduce the load before symptoms show up. And the single most effective way to reduce hand and wrist load is to spend less time typing.
What Repetitive Strain Actually Is
Carpal tunnel syndrome is compression of the median nerve where it passes through the wrist. Repetitive motion, especially the flexion and extension of typing, creates inflammation in the surrounding tissue. Over time, that inflammation narrows the carpal tunnel and presses on the nerve.
Early symptoms include tingling or numbness in the fingers, weakness in the grip, and discomfort that worsens with use. People often notice it first at night, when the wrists are resting in a slightly flexed position.
The tricky part is that symptoms appear well after the strain pattern is established. You can be building the problem for months before you feel anything.
How Much Are You Actually Typing?
Knowledge workers who type heavily can accumulate 10,000 to 15,000 keystrokes per hour. Over an eight-hour workday, that's somewhere between 80,000 and 120,000 individual finger impacts, every day.
Not all of those are avoidable. But a significant portion is prose: emails, messages, documents, notes. Text that could be captured by voice instead of keyboard.
Reducing the typing load by even 30 percent makes a meaningful difference in cumulative strain. If you currently type around 5,000 words a day and move 1,500 of those to dictation, your hands do substantially less work over a week, a month, a year.
The Ergonomics That Actually Help
If you're going to type, the setup matters. Your wrists should be neutral, not bent up or down. Keyboard height should let your elbows sit at roughly 90 degrees. Wrist rests are useful during pauses but shouldn't support your wrists while you actively type, that actually increases pressure on the carpal tunnel.
A split keyboard reduces ulnar deviation, the sideways angle most people hold their wrists at on a standard keyboard. Mechanical keyboards with lighter switches reduce the force per keystroke. A vertical mouse reduces forearm pronation, the rotational tension from keeping your palm flat on a conventional mouse.
These adjustments help. They don't substitute for simply typing less.
Using Voice as a Load-Reduction Tool
Dictation tools like VoiceInk let you move the prose workload off your hands entirely. For emails, documents, meeting notes, and Slack messages, you speak and the text appears. Your wrists do nothing.
This isn't just useful if you already have symptoms. It's a preventive practice. The people who develop serious repetitive strain injuries are usually the ones who waited until it hurt to make changes. By then, recovery is slow and the damage is already done.
Building a voice dictation habit now, when your hands are fine, is a much easier change than trying to build it when you're in pain and under pressure to still produce.
Small Habits That Add Up
A few practical shifts:
Take a real break every hour. Stand up, shake out your hands, let the wrists rest in a neutral position for two minutes. Set a timer if you have to.
Dictate your longest daily writing tasks. That's usually email. If you write 30 emails a day and speak even half of them, the keystroke reduction is significant.
Stretch your forearms. The flexor muscles that control your fingers run from the hand up to the elbow. Gentle stretching, wrist extended, pulling back with the opposite hand for 30 seconds, relieves tension that builds across a day of typing.
Your hands are one of the few things you genuinely cannot replace. Treating the workload on them as something manageable, not just inevitable, is worth doing before the first symptom appears.
Stop typing. Start talking.
