Protect Your Wrists Before the Pain Starts

Most people wait until something hurts to take repetitive strain injury seriously. By then, recovery takes weeks or months. The prevention window is earlier, quieter, and much cheaper to act on.

What Repetitive Strain Actually Is
RSI is not one injury. It is a category of injuries caused by repeated small movements that overload tendons, nerves, or muscles faster than they can recover. Carpal tunnel syndrome compresses the median nerve at the wrist. Tendinitis inflames the tendons themselves. Trigger finger causes a locking sensation in the finger joints.
They all share a cause: volume. It is not one long session that creates the injury. It is thousands of sessions that accumulate micro-damage until the tissue cannot keep up.
The early signs are easy to dismiss. Slight stiffness in the morning. Tingling in the ring finger or pinky. A dull ache across the forearm after a long writing day. These are not random. They are the body signaling that the load exceeds the recovery rate.
The Ergonomics That Actually Matter
Keyboard position matters more than most people adjust for. Your wrists should be neutral, not bent upward or downward, while you type. A keyboard that sits too high on the desk forces the wrist into extension with every keystroke. A wrist rest that is too thick does the same thing in the other direction.
Elbow angle should be around 90 degrees, or slightly more open. If your shoulders creep upward during long sessions, your armrest height is wrong.
Split keyboards reduce ulnar deviation, the sideways angle the wrists take when using a standard keyboard layout. This is one of the more evidence-backed ergonomic adjustments and one of the most ignored. The typing adjustment period is a few weeks. The wrist benefit is long-term.
Reducing Volume Is the Direct Solution
Ergonomic equipment reduces strain per keystroke. Reducing the number of keystrokes reduces total load. Both matter.

Stretches That Are Worth Doing
Wrist extension and flexion stretches take thirty seconds and reduce tendon tightness after long sessions. Hold your arm out, palm up, and gently press the fingers down toward the floor with your other hand. Hold for fifteen seconds. Flip and repeat with the palm facing down.
Finger spreads, making the hand as wide as possible and holding for ten seconds, reduce stiffness in the small muscles between the fingers. These are not dramatic interventions. They maintain range of motion and signal to the tendons that load is varying rather than constant.
Do them at lunch and before bed if you type heavily. Not because they fix an existing injury, but because they buy time before one starts.
The Cost of Waiting
Surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome has a high success rate. Recovery involves four to six weeks of limited hand use. That is four to six weeks of reduced output, awkward workarounds, and frustration that could have been avoided with earlier habit changes.
