Protect Your Hands Before They Start Hurting

Protect Your Hands Before They Start Hurting

Repetitive strain injuries do not happen suddenly. They accumulate over months of small insults to the same tendons and nerves. By the time you feel the tingling in your fingers or the ache in your wrists, your body has been sending low-level signals for a long time. Most people ignore those signals until ignoring them is no longer an option.

If you type for a living, the question is not whether you are at risk. The question is how much runway you have and what you are doing with it.

What Actually Causes Typing Injuries

Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when the median nerve, which runs through a narrow passage in your wrist, gets compressed. Repetitive wrist extension, the position most people hold while typing on a flat keyboard, creates sustained pressure on that nerve over time.

Tendinitis and repetitive strain injury are broader terms for inflammation in the tendons of the fingers, hands, and forearms caused by, as the name says, repetition. Eight hours a day of keystrokes adds up to millions of small movements annually. The body was not built for that kind of monotony.

Warning Signs to Take Seriously

Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, or middle finger is the classic early sign of carpal tunnel. Many people notice it at night before they notice it during the day, because the wrist curls inward during sleep and compounds the compression.

Fatigue in the forearms after normal typing sessions is another early signal. If your arms feel heavy or sore after a standard workday, that is not normal soreness. That is tissue under stress.

Do not wait for pain. Pain in RSI contexts often means you are past the easy intervention window.

Adjustments That Actually Help

Keyboard position matters more than most people act on. Your wrists should be neutral, not bent upward or downward while typing. A keyboard tray that sits slightly below desk level can help. Wrist rests are useful for resting between bursts of typing, not for resting on while typing.

Breaks are not optional. The Pomodoro method, 25 minutes of work followed by a 5-minute break, exists for productivity reasons, but the physical benefit is real too. Standing up and letting your arms hang for five minutes resets circulation and releases accumulated tension.

Strength and mobility work for the hands, wrist circles, finger extensions, forearm stretches, takes about three minutes and makes a measurable difference when done consistently.

Where Dictation Fits

Reducing the total volume of typing is the most direct intervention available. Every word you dictate is a keystroke you did not make. For a heavy typist producing 3,000 words a day, shifting even half of that to voice input cuts daily keystrokes roughly in half.

Tools like VoiceInk make this practical because there is no mode-switching or workflow disruption. You press a key, speak, and the text appears where you need it. For people already experiencing hand fatigue, that reduction in keystroke volume can be the difference between continuing to work comfortably and needing to take time off.

Dictation is also useful for tasks that do not require precise cursor control. Emails, notes, documentation, Slack messages, first drafts. These do not need a keyboard at all.

The Maintenance Mindset

Athletes maintain their bodies because their bodies are how they perform. Knowledge workers rarely apply the same logic, even though their hands are just as essential to their work.

You do not have to wait for a diagnosis to start treating your hands as something worth protecting. Adjust your setup, take your breaks, do a few minutes of mobility work, and start looking for the typing you can replace.

Small reductions in load, compounded over years, are the difference between decades of comfortable work and a career interrupted by preventable injury.
