Carpal Tunnel Is Preventable: What Developers Get Wrong

Carpal tunnel syndrome does not announce itself. It starts as mild tingling after a long session. Then it becomes a persistent ache. Then you are wearing a brace to bed and reconsidering your entire career. The average age at first diagnosis for software developers is 35. That is not old.
The good news is that most cases are preventable. But prevention requires understanding what actually causes the problem.
What Carpal Tunnel Actually Is
The carpal tunnel is a narrow passage in your wrist that houses the median nerve. Repetitive hand and wrist motion, especially typing with bent or angled wrists, creates inflammation in the surrounding tissue. That inflammation compresses the nerve. The compression causes pain, tingling, and eventually weakness in the hand.
The key word is repetitive. A single long coding session is not the problem. It is 10 years of daily sessions, each adding a small increment of strain, that creates the injury. By the time it hurts, the damage has usually been building for a long time.
The Risk Factors Most Developers Ignore
Keyboard angle matters more than most people realize. A keyboard that forces your wrists to bend upward, which is most flat keyboards on desks, puts continuous strain on the carpal tunnel even when you are typing correctly. An ergonomic keyboard or a negative-tilt setup reduces this significantly.
Mouse use is often worse than typing. The sustained grip and fine motor movement of mouse work creates more concentrated strain than keyboard typing. Switching to keyboard shortcuts eliminates a surprising amount of this.
Breaks matter, but only if they are actual breaks. Pausing to read documentation with your hands still resting on the keyboard does not count. Your wrists need to be in a neutral, unloaded position for a few minutes every hour.

Switch tasks strategically. Alternate between high-keystroke work and lower-keystroke work across the day. Do not write 3,000 words of documentation in a single sitting.
Consider your mouse. Vertical mice, trackballs, and trackpads each distribute strain differently. If you are already experiencing symptoms, experiment with switching.
The Longer View
Most developers think about their physical health in the short term. You feel fine, so you assume you are fine. Repetitive strain does not work that way. The damage is cumulative, and the warning signs are easy to rationalize away until they are not.
